Fabio Barilari | Architect, illustrator and painter
Fabio Barilari is an architect, illustrator and painter.
As an architect, degree with honors in architectural and urban design at Università "La Sapienza" in Rome, since 1989 he has collaborated as a free-lance with several prestigious studios and professionals, specializing on complex architectural and urban structures.
Parallel to these collaborations, in 1996 he founded Fabio Barilari Architetti; the projects of the studio have been awarded numerous prizes and publications, among which the 1st prize Inarch both in 2000 and in 2010, and have been presented in important exhibitions, such as the Biennale of Venice and the Biennale of Young European Artists of the Mediterranean, Rome, 1999.
In May 2012 has been invited at the 13th International Architectural Triennial in Sofia in representation of the Board of Architects of Rome; in the same year, the project Picture House has been selected for the Medaglia d'Oro all'Architettura Italiana - Triennale di Milano.
Fabio's personal work has been published in national and international architectural books, magazines and web sites.
Since 2008, Fabio Barilari developed his professional activity, extending his research, beyond architecture, to sectors related to illustration, graphics and painting. The research developped in these different fields, has been presented for the first time in August 2011, on ABITARE, directed by Stefano Boeri.
In the field of illustrations and paintings, in January 2013 has presented the project "Il Senso delle Cose" in the personal exhibition at Chiostro del Bramante in Rome.
His work was exhibited in numerous personal exhibitions in Italy, Germany, France, Spain, USA, China, Vietnam, Ukraine and Korea.
He has collaborated with music and comic-strips magazines such as “Follow That Dream” and “ANIMAls” as well as several music groups and theatre companies.
He is developping the project "Reading the City" financed by the Goethe-Institut: It presents and illustrates some of the most important cities in Germany
In January 2015 has presented his works in all these fields of research, at the INTERNO14 Gallery in Rome.
In November 2018 has received a Special Mention at LuccaComics by La Stampa magazine in collaboration with Bao Publishing.
His painting "30 Nodi" is currently in display at Saatchi Gallery in London.
From 2019 he collaborates with the curatorial team of the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale under the direction of Arch. Alessandro Melis.
Barilari is professor at Arcadia University in Rome, he also taught at the University of Rome La Sapienza and at the Rome campus of the California Polytechnic, Cornell University, Iowa State University. Over the years he has taught architecture and urban design, drawing and history of art and architecture.
